Crypto spot vs perpetual futures: what a chart represents

The same coin name can appear on several different instruments. A Bitcoin spot market and a Bitcoin perpetual futures market both reference BTC, but they do not represent the same exposure.

Spot describes a purchase or sale of the asset

A spot transaction exchanges an asset against another asset or currency. In a BTC/USDT spot market, the pair identifies Bitcoin as the asset being quoted and USDT as the quote asset. Where an exchange holds the purchased asset, custody arrangements are a separate question.

Reading that market does not require placing a transaction. Trendium is a market-awareness app and does not hold coins, connect to your wallet or execute spot orders.

A perpetual future is a derivative contract

A conventional crypto perpetual future is a derivatives contract without a scheduled expiry, referencing an underlying asset. Its price exposure is different from simply owning that asset. Funding mechanisms are commonly used to help keep the contract price near the underlying spot market.

Coinbase’s perpetual-futures explanation describes these concepts. Product terms differ by venue; “perpetual-style” offerings may have different structures. Check the actual contract rather than assuming the label defines every rule.

Why open interest belongs to derivatives context

Open interest measures outstanding derivatives contracts. It is not a count of spot coin holders, and an open-interest change does not describe every purchase or sale of the underlying coin.

When Trendium places open-interest data beside a market reading, treat it as context from its derivatives data sources. It does not turn a spot price move into a direct report of how much cash individual traders deposited.

Match the instrument before comparing two screens

  • Check the base asset and quote asset, such as BTC and USDT.
  • Check whether the screen is spot, futures or perpetual futures.
  • Check the exchange or data source and the observation time.
  • Check the displayed price type, if specified, rather than assuming every figure is the last traded price.
  • Match the period for percentage changes and position changes.

Small price differences can reflect different instruments or sources. Before interpreting a disagreement as a trend change, make sure you are comparing the same thing.

Market awareness is different from account risk

Derivatives positions may involve margin, funding costs and liquidation rules. Those depend on the venue and account, not just on whether the underlying market reading leans bullish or bearish. See funding and liquidation explained.

Trendium does not know your collateral, calculate your account’s liquidation price or decide how much exposure is appropriate. It explains the market information it displays. The market checklist helps you keep that observation separate from a transaction.
